What are Warts?
Warts are benign skin growths that are caused by a viral infection at the topmost layer of the skin. They are often flesh-colored and roughly textured, but they can also be dark and smooth. Warts occur most commonly on the fingers, around the nails, and on the backs of the hands. These features are spread through infection or skin to skin contact with someone who is already infected. They can also be contracted by touching an object that an infected person has touched.
The best way to prevent yourself from developing warts or to stop them from spreading is to take a few simple precautions.
- Wash your hands regularly
- Don’t pick at existing warts
- Cover existing warts with bandages
- Keep your hands and feet dry
- Always wear shoes when you walk around public places
All of these prevention methods involve keeping your skin clean and infection free. These growths are most likely to develop on areas of the body that have broken skin, so try to keep any cuts and scrapes that you have bandaged.
If left alone, warts can subside on their own. While they typically don’t pose any medical danger to the people that have them, many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.
At RidgeView Dermatology, we’re proud to offer our patients a wide variety of wart removal treatments. Because warts are caused by a virus that stays in the body even after the physical wart is removed, it can be difficult to stop them from reappearing. To help combat this, we usually combine a few separate approaches to ensure that the wart is entirely removed for good. Our board-certified dermatologists will take into account the condition of your particular case of warts to decide which treatment is best for you.
