Proper skincare is a lifelong venture that begins in childhood and adolescence. During these early stages of life, there are a number of different skin conditions that children and teens can develop. Providing these individuals with high-quality skin care can help correct some of these conditions before they worsen, and help ensure lifelong skin health and wellness.
At RidgeView Dermatology, we have an enduring commitment to providing patients in the Lynchburg, Hardy, and Forest areas with the highest standard of dermatological care at every stage of life. That’s why we’re proud to offer pediatric and adolescent dermatology care. Young children and infants have the potential to develop skin conditions in these earliest stages of their lives.
Some of the most common of these skin conditions include:
- Eczema. This is a chronic condition that manifests itself in the form of red, dry, itchy skin. This condition affects between 15-30% of children. It usually appears in infancy with nearly 50% of affected children experiencing symptoms within the first six months of life.
- Warts. These skin growths are caused by human papillomavirus and spread through contact with infected people or the objects they have touched.
- Molluscum Contagiosum. This condition is caused by a virus and manifests itself in the form of small flesh colored or pink bumps. Like warts, molluscum contagiosum spread through contact.
- Infantile hemangiomas. These are one of the most common vascular birthmarks, affecting 5-10% of infants. While most hemangiomas are harmless, some may develop in dangerous areas and require treatment.
Our practice offers safe, effective, and gentle treatments to help combat and manage these conditions.
While adolescents are also prone to suffering from conditions like eczema and warts, the most defining and common skin condition of this period of life is acne. Nearly everyone contracts acne for at least some period of time during their teen years.
These pustules, whiteheads, and blackheads can appear on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. While acne does not pose any serious health risks, it can be a source of embarrassment and shame for the people that have it. This is particularly difficult to deal with during an individual’s formative teen years.
RidgeView Dermatology offers comprehensive skin care treatments for adolescents suffering from acne that can help improve their skin’s health through the rest of their lives. During each patient’s initial examination, we evaluate their skin type and current condition to decide which combination of topical and oral treatments is right for them. We also offer in-office procedures that can help improve the condition of certain kinds of acne.
