What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is one of the most common non-invasive procedures used today. This skin rejuvenation treatment uses absolutely no chemicals, needles, or surgery. During each microdermabrasion session, microcrystals are directed at the skin and used to remove dirt, impurities, and dead skin cells in the uppermost layers.
Microdermabrasion can be used to correct a wide variety of aesthetic issues, including:
- Fine lines
- Age spots
In addition to cosmetic concerns, microdermabrasion can also be used to help improve the appearance of rosacea symptoms. Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition that causes redness, swelling, and skin eruptions that are similar to acne.
How it Works
During a microdermabrasion procedure, a small stream of crystals is aimed through a handpiece at the treatment area, scraping away dead skin cells and impurities. The suction created by the handpiece clears away excess debris and crystals.
As these crystals remove skin cells and impurities from the upper layer of the skin, they also create small injuries on its surface. These injuries encourage the body to begin its natural healing process, causing it to send additional blood and growth factors to the area. This results in smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin as the surface repairs itself.
What to Expect from Treatment
Each microdermabrasion procedure takes between 30-60 minutes to complete and involves little to no downtime. While few patients report that the treatment is painful, the crystals sometimes create a warming sensation that can be slightly uncomfortable.
For optimal results, most patients undergo between 5-12 treatment sessions, each spaced 2-3 weeks apart. These repeated treatments are necessary because they encourage the production of newer, stronger layers of skin that are highly concentrated with collagen and elastin. Each successive treatment brings patients skin that is slightly more tight, soft, and youthful-looking.
