What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is by and large one of the safest and least invasive exfoliation methods available today. Using a sharpened scalpel, dead skin cells are safely and effectively removed from the surface of the skin. This leaves patients with a smoother, healthier-looking complexion. This treatment also removes the fine vellus hairs that grow on the surface of the face, making it easier for women to put foundation evenly and cleanly on the skin. This treatment is safe enough to be used on women who are pregnant and nursing and features absolutely no adverse side effects and downtime.
How it Works
There are two different types of exfoliation: physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation treatments, like chemical peels and microdermabrasion, use the aid of chemicals to remove dead skin cells and impurities from the uppermost layers of the skin. Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation treatment, meaning that it uses a physical tool to exfoliate the skin.
During a dermaplaning treatment, the edge of a sharp scalpel is passed over the face using light, feathered strokes. This removes any dead skin cells that are sitting on the skin’s surface along with the fine, vellus hair there. Because the clogging of pores with dead skin cells and dirt is one of the primary causes of acne, this treatment can help prevent breakouts and improve the overall health of the skin. It can even subtly improve the appearance of some acne scars and forms of pigmentation.
What to Expect from Treatment
Each dermaplaning treatment typically takes just 20-30 minutes to complete. Once it’s over, patients can immediately go back to their everyday routines. This is because dermaplaning involves absolutely no adverse side effects or downtime. It’s recommended that patients receive this treatment on a monthly basis to make sure that their skin stays exfoliated and hair-free.
Dermaplaning is one of the safest and most effective ways to subtly improve the health and appearance of the skin. If you’re interested in learning more information about this unique treatment or would like to schedule a consultation appointment, contact Aesthetics by RidgeView Dermatology today.
