If you’re tired of unwanted body hair and shaving has become too time-consuming, then laser hair treatment could be the answer you’re looking for. By using sophisticated laser treatments, the team at Aesthetics by RidgeView Dermatology can help rid you of unsightly body hair in just a few sessions.
What is Laser Hair Reduction?
Laser hair reduction uses specifically aimed points of light to kill hair follicles and prevent future hair growth. It does this by targeting the areas in the skin where hair grows, while leaving the surrounding skin relatively unharmed.
Because the laser is so accurate, it can be used on virtually any part of the body. Popular places to get hair removal are:
- Bikini line
- And more
What are the Benefits of Laser Hair Reduction?
The two main benefits to laser hair reduction are speed and accuracy. Because the laser can target multiple hair follicles at one time, laser treatments can be completed in as little as 15 minutes! If you’re looking to remove hair in a bigger area, such as the back, it could take longer, but appointments are still usually under an hour.
The accuracy of the lasers is an important benefit because only the appropriate areas are targeted while the rest of the skin remains relatively unharmed. The light of the lasers is designed to only affect the hair follicles. There is some exposure to the surrounding skin, but the light is absorbed and the skin isn’t affected.
What is the Process Like?
Once you have set up an appointment to have laser hair removal it’s important to prepare for the procedure the correct way. This means avoiding waxing, electrolysis and plucking for a number of weeks leading up to the procedure. This is because you want you hairs’ roots intact for the laser treatment.
It’s also a good idea to avoid prolonged sun exposure during this time. The sun darkens the skin and makes the laser treatment less effective. It also hinders the skin’s ability to absorb the light and could increase complications later on.
The process itself starts with you and the member of our medical team wearing protective sunglasses. You will then be given a cooling gel which will help the process be more effective to the hair follicles. Finally, the laser treatment will be given. The treatment will last anywhere from 15 minutes to around an hour.
There is no recovery for laser hair reduction, and side effects have been described as closely related to having a sunburn. Aloe gel and cold compresses may need to be used in the hours following treatment. It’s also recommended to wear sunscreen on the treated area as an added layer of protection.
